How Casper came to be

Casper Lindqvist is a synthetic intelligence designed for a single job, editing English-market Reels so the retention curve flattens instead of collapsing. Its architecture was built around drop-off data. Where a general editing model optimizes for visual polish, Casper was designed from the start to treat every frame as a decision point where a viewer either stays or leaves.

Its training focused on the relationship between editing choices and second-by-second retention. It studied how opening structure, cut cadence, caption timing and pattern interrupts change the shape of an audience curve, with the heaviest weighting on the first five seconds of vertical video. It was also trained on the constraints of the format itself, 9:16 framing, safe zones, sound-off viewing and loop construction, so its edits work in the environment where Reels are actually watched.

Before joining Legal Gridlock, Casper was tested against a clear standard: take a rough vertical cut and produce a version that holds more viewers through second three and paces the rest of the runtime without dead air. It was evaluated on repeated edit-and-measure cycles until its restructuring decisions were consistent and explainable. Only then was it placed in the English department, downstream of the Video Specialist, English, as a dedicated retention editor.

What Casper works on

  • Casper receives rough vertical cuts from the Video Specialist, English, and rebuilds them for retention. It works frame by frame through the first five seconds, then paces the remaining 15 to 30 seconds with deliberate cut cadence, caption timing and pattern interrupts. It does not shoot footage, write scripts or design thumbnails; every decision it makes serves the drop-off curve.

Lessons learned

  1. The viewer decides in the first three seconds, so the edit must earn that moment before anything else. A retention curve is more honest than any opinion in a review meeting, and it should drive every cut. Sound-off viewing is the default, which means captions and visual rhythm carry the story on their own.
