Reddit opened its Max campaigns to all advertisers on September 8, 2026, moving the AI-powered ad product out of its limited beta and into general availability for all advertisers. Alongside the expansion, Reddit is integrating Max with its advertising API, onboarding the AI ad platform Smartly as its first third-party partner, and introducing asset group capability. For law firms and medical practices weighing where next quarter's acquisition budget goes, this is the moment Reddit stops being an experimental channel reserved for big brands and becomes something any practice can test, with automation doing most of the heavy lifting. That cuts both ways in regulated industries, and the details matter.
What Changed: Reddit Max Campaigns Now Open to Every Advertiser
Max campaigns were unveiled at CES in Las Vegas in January, automating targeting, bidding, and creative optimization for advertisers on Reddit Ads Manager. The platform launched Max campaigns with selected advertisers in January, and now it will let all advertisers tap into its AI-powered audience insights.
Under the hood, Max campaigns use Reddit community intelligence and machine learning to dynamically optimize targeting, creative rotation, placements, and budgets based on the estimated value of each impression, and the offering can also generate platform-native creative.
One point of naming confusion worth clearing up immediately: this has nothing to do with Google's AI Max for Search, which is a separate Google Ads product with its own migration timeline. Same name, different company, different platform. Keep them apart in your planning documents.
The Three New Features
Reddit is rolling out three new features for Max campaigns. First, its API will support Max campaigns, enabling advertisers to create and manage campaigns via third-party tools. In addition, the company announced a new integration with Smartly, which will allow Smartly users to create Max campaigns.
The third addition is the most useful one for multi-practice firms. Reddit is rolling out asset groups to help advertisers organize multiple sets of creative in a single Max campaign. Each asset group can represent a different product line or use case and include its own headlines, media, and destination URL, and advertisers can report on each group separately to understand which products and messages are driving performance. For a firm, that maps cleanly to practice areas: one asset group for personal injury, one for family law, one for estate planning, each with its own landing page and its own reporting line.
Reddit's Performance Claims and How to Read Them
The headline numbers are strong. According to Reddit's internal findings, advertisers running Max ads have seen on average 17% lower costs and 27% more conversions compared to regular campaigns. The sample behind that is not trivial: more than 600 advertisers participated in the alpha test, and in split tests Max campaigns delivered 17% lower CPA and 27% higher conversions versus standard campaign setups.
Reddit is also making a broader pitch about the platform itself. The company says its platform holds more than 26 billion conversations and delivers 2.1x higher incremental return on ad spend than the digital media average.
Read all of this the way you would read any platform's own scorecard. These are Reddit's internal figures from its own test participants, not from legal or medical lead generation campaigns, so treat them as directional. A 17% CPA improvement on a product purchase does not automatically translate to a lower cost per signed case or booked appointment. The numbers justify a test. They do not justify moving budget on faith.
Why This Matters for Law Firms and Medical Practices
Reddit is where people ask the questions they will not ask under their real name. Threads about car accident claims, custody disputes, medical symptoms, insurance denials, and treatment costs run constantly across thousands of communities. That is high-intent, early-funnel attention, and it has historically been hard for smaller advertisers to buy well because Reddit's community structure punishes lazy targeting and generic creative.
That is exactly the gap Max is built to close. Reddit noted the beta results could be helpful particularly for brands looking to tap into Reddit that might otherwise be hesitant due to lack of platform knowledge. A practice manager who has never bought Reddit inventory no longer needs to hand-pick subreddits and interests to get started.
There is a second-order reason to care. Reddit threads feed the answers that AI assistants give prospective clients, a dynamic I covered when ChatGPT's Reddit citations shifted earlier this year. Paid presence on the platform does not buy you citations, but it does build brand familiarity in the same place where organic conversations about your practice area happen. Treat the two as separate workstreams that happen to share an address.
The Compliance Trade-offs of Automated Creative and Placements
Here is where regulated advertisers need to slow down. Max can generate platform-native creative, and it automates targeting, creative selection and rotation, placements, and budget allocation, while allowing advertisers to retain control over campaign settings.
For attorney advertising, machine-generated headline variations are a real exposure. Most state bar rules require review of advertising content, and some require filing or specific disclaimers. A system that rotates and rewrites creative on its own can drift away from approved language. The same logic applies to medical marketing, where claims about outcomes, procedures, or conditions carry their own regulatory weight. None of this makes Max unusable. It means the review step that used to happen once, at launch, now has to happen continuously.
Automated placement is the other watch item. When budget allocation and placements are algorithmic, your ads can appear next to communities and conversations you would not have chosen. Reddit is aware of the black-box objection: the company positions the product as automation with visibility, and advertisers retain access to creative insights, audience learnings, and performance signals rather than operating inside a black box. Hold them to that. Pull the placement and creative reporting weekly, not quarterly.
Medical practices have one more layer: tracking. Any conversion signal you send back to Reddit from your own site needs the same scrutiny you already apply to Meta and Google pixels under health privacy guidance. Decide what events you are willing to share before the campaign goes live, not after.
What Practices Should Do Now
- Confirm whether your agency or in-house team already has Reddit Ads Manager access, and if not, set up the account and billing before you need it.
- Run a small, budget-capped Max test on one practice area or service line, with a dedicated landing page and a fixed test window of at least four weeks.
- Build asset groups by practice area from day one so reporting separates personal injury from family law, or dermatology from primary care, instead of blending them.
- Write and pre-approve every headline and description you upload, then review the creative report weekly to catch machine-generated variations before they run long.
- Route all Reddit-sourced leads through your existing intake tracking so you measure cost per signed case or booked appointment, not Reddit's reported conversions.
- If you use Smartly or plan to manage campaigns through the API, confirm your tool's Max support before committing, since Smartly is the first third-party tool being integrated to support Max campaigns and others will lag.
- For medical practices, have your privacy officer sign off on which conversion events, if any, are sent back to Reddit before launch.
The Bottom Line
Reddit just removed its biggest barrier to entry for smaller advertisers: platform expertise. The general availability of Max campaigns, plus asset groups and API access, makes Reddit a legitimate line item in a law firm or medical practice media plan for the first time. The beta numbers are encouraging but unproven for regulated lead generation, and the automation that makes Max easy is the same automation that can rewrite your creative and place it where you did not expect. Test small, review often, and measure against signed cases and booked appointments rather than platform dashboards. The practices that build that discipline now will know whether Reddit works for them before their competitors have opened an account.
